Kayla Moon: Confidence in Style, From the Inside Out

Kayla Moon, is the founder and creative brain behind XFLOS, an unconventional floristry brand, based out of the vibrant contemporary artists precinct, Collingwood Yards.

Working across weddings and large-scale floral installations, her approach leans more sculptural than traditional. It’s modern, expressive, and grounded in a clear set of values - sustainability, inclusivity, and ethical sourcing

After more than ten years in the industry, XFLOS has grown into something beyond floristry. Part studio, part event space, part creative hub. With Flower Club at the centre; A space where flowers are just one part of a bigger, more community-led experience

For Kayla, flowers are a tool for expression. A way to build connection, a foundation for community and above all, an art form.

Her interpretation of style follows the same thinking. It’s less about what you wear and more about what you’re translating. It’s the internal made visible. A reflection of what you’re drawn to, how you feel, and what you value. She emphasises finding your own lane and being okay with that. Confidence, for her, comes from that same place, built through the people around her, her self-care practices, and the way she shows up for her community.

“What style means to me is the expression of the internal into the external world, and I think it’s really important that we all have our own unique styles and that all are accepted."

"What makes me confident is my values, my friends, my self-care practices and community care practices”

We popped into XFLOS Flower Club to see how that shows up in Kaylas’ day to day, how she moves, what she leans into, and what confidence in style actually looks like in her world.

Can you tell us a little bit about this space?

Yeah. My partner, who is an architect, built it. We do flowers by day and events by night.

It used to be the Collingwood Yard storage, so it was a bit of a dungeon basement when we first got it. I was lucky enough to be dating - and still am dating an architect who helped me plan the whole space after a vision of just a Pinterest board. I think he did a pretty good job at recognising my vision.

So, yeah, it's a kind of multi-function space. During the day, we do walk-ins, online orders, and weekly orders for corporate and local businesses around the town. Then we do specialised events by night that suit the space. ambient nights, workshops, things like that. We also offer the space free of charge to some people who might not otherwise be able to afford to hire a space. We have a dance crew come through here where they do dance-offs. It’s also used for photo shoots and things like that. And then we also work with and collaborate with other brands to bring events.

What does your morning ritual usually look like?

Oh, it depends on the morning. Like a market morning ritual is definitely, make breakfast and coffee the night before because we get up at, you know, 6:00 or 6:30. And then get in the van and listen to some VMs or some music and go get the market haul.

If it's a more chill day, I'll usually read or do yoga or hang out with my partner and then come into work after brekkie and get a coffee with the girls. And we usually have a chat about the day

Speaking of coffee - are you more of an iced or hot girl?

Definitely hot, as per as per my Chinese doctor. II've worked with my Chinese doctor to eliminate cold in the mornings as per my needs, and it's so much better. Everyone should drink hot in the morning.

If you could describe your style in three words, what would they be?

Myself in three words? Um, probably creative, confident, grounded.

What's your recipe for a good outfit?

Recipe for a good outfit is being as comfortable as possible and wearing something that makes you feel good.

If you could steal someone else's style, who would it be?

Steal someone's style? I would never. I'm an Aquarian, we're VERY independent. They call us the alien of the zodiac. I just don't feel like I could ever steal someone's style, but if I have to answer, maybe Billie Eilish.

And if there's one piece of advice you'd give to anyone that's trying to find their style, what would it be?

Instead of looking at other people, look at your body shape and style and what suits you and what you're drawn to rather than the influence of online culture. Look at pieces of art, sculpture, film, and television. Look outside, copying others.

What's a message you would give your inner critic?

Ooh. Um, at this time in my life, well done for finally settling down

What's a message you would give to your younger self?

Well done on not being so loud anymore. And stop living outside of yourself. Look within.

If I were looking to become a florist, what are three things I should consider?

Consider that it is very labour-intensive. So, if you like that, gorgeous. If you don't, be prepared. TAFE is amazing, but it's not everything. If you can get an apprenticeship, that's also a great way to go. And you can make it whatever you want. It is a creative art form as much as a trade.

Lastly, what's your favourite song that makes you feel the most confident?

I don’t think I have just one track. I have playlists for different moods that I create myself. I do love listening to Sade and Erykah Badu, though; they’re two artists I always come back to for confidence.

Xflos is open Tuesday to Saturday and is located at 30B Perry Stree, Colllingwood Yards, so make sure you pop in and say hello next time you’re in the area.
